Shockwave Therapy FAQ’s

  • Shockwave Therapy, also known as extra-corporeal shockwave treatment (ESWT), is a non-surgical treatment that works by delivering high-energy sound waves to damaged or injured soft tissue.

  • Shockwave Therapy produces an inflammatory response in the body. In response, metabolic activity increases, which stimulates and accelerates the natural healing process. Many patients experience an immediate reduction in pain and improved ease of movement. Secondary effects are usually minor and Shockwave Therapy may also help reduce the likelihood of further surgery.

  • A minimum of 2,000 shocks are delivered per session, which lasts approximately six minutes. Your first Shockwave Therapy appointment will be slightly longer, as it includes a consultation to assess your condition and confirm your suitability for treatment, alongside your first Shockwave Therapy session.

  • Shockwave Therapy may be used to treat the following conditions:

    • Plantar fasciitis

    • Mid-body Achilles tendinopathy

    • Insertional Achilles tendinopathy

    • Tennis elbow

    • Golfer’s elbow

    • Knee osteoarthritis

    • Myofascial trigger points

    • Lower back pain

    • Greater trochanteric pain syndrome

    • Calcifying tendinitis of the shoulder

    • Frozen shoulder

    • Osgood–Schlatter disease

    • Spasticity

    • Patella tip syndrome

    • Medial tibial stress syndrome

    • Bone marrow oedema

Please note that this list is not exhaustive. If your injury or condition is not listed above, you are very welcome to email us with any questions or further information and a Shockwave Therapy-trained practitioner will be happy to advise on whether this treatment may be suitable for you.

  • Shockwave Therapy is offered only as a block of five sessions. This block has been carefully curated in line with Shockwave Therapy protocol, which indicates that five treatments at weekly intervals are usually required to achieve effective results.

While response to treatment can vary from person to person, follow-up Shockwave Therapy appointments can only be considered after completion of the initial five-session block and only if deemed suitable by your Shockwave Therapy practitioner.

  • Shockwave Therapy can be uncomfortable. Your first session will usually begin at a lower intensity, which will then be gradually increased to a level you feel comfortable with.

  • The cost is £400 for the block of five once-weekly sessions.

  • Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing that allows easy access to the area being treated. Depending on the location of your injury, this may include shorts or clothing that can be easily adjusted. If you are still unsure what to wear, please feel free to ask when you reply to this email.
